Some of those pictures look like the town was pulverised during WWII or WWI... Heerlen has an interesting history, when I'm done with my Battle of the Bulge book, I might look for something on Heerlen or the general area.

It was in World War II. The Netherlands didn't joined World War I, but some vessels of the Holland-America Line like Rotterdam IV carried ammunation for the British Soldiers.

Surviving the war as a Jew was really hard in a country like this. You had to sleep for years on a small hidden room with many other people.

Histories like Heerlen will no longer re-live. An sort of King of Pop from Heerlen called Wiel Knipa said that Heerlen was never proud about the things they had in the city, only with the exploded Tall Jan in 1976.
